Hey all,

I'm chasing a gearbox/transmission to put behind my 6.7L Cummins.

My preferences are

Allison 1000 6sp

NV5600

4L80E

I know the GU Patrol box and transfer is being used behind a Duramax 6.6 so it would probably handle the power too, should've measured mine before i sold it.

Not sure which way i'm going with the transfer yet either, i have a GQ Patrol one as well as the NP205 currently in it.

Open to other suggestions and or ideas also.

Cheers

Luke

Don't go for the Allison 6 Speed, No computers available, go for the Allison 5 Speed instead. Patrol Transfer Case the best option for parts and availability

What do you mean no computers available?  As in none in country?  There is one on ebay at the moment with ECM, push button controller, TC, flexplate for $4500, pretty good price i reckon.

Moose, you shouldn't have any probs with the six speed as the Cummins will work with the Allison  TCM,I think David is talking about a stand alone TCM, Allison TCM to Cummins ECM are readly available,Marcus from OKA now works for Heavy automatics in Perth, give him a call he may be able to work you a deal,I have a 1000 six speed sitting on the workshop floor with a push button selector,if you need any dimensions I will be able to help.

We measured everything yesterday, from memory the trans needs to be shorter than 950mm, just so as not to shorten the rear drive shaft length, if anything i like to lengthen it for pinion angle.

I looked at a Hino gearbox ther other day that was only rated to 240HP, we could de-rate the engine but i would prefer not to.

The engine itself will fit, just, going to have to move the radiator forward a bit which is no big deal, there's plenty of room, the plan is to have a cartridge type unit with the radiator, aftercooler, condenser all mounted and the whole lot goes in together.

Joseph, which model Allison do you have and do you know the ratios at all?  The one i'm sort of interested in is a 6sp 3650P, it was behind a Cummins 8.3L

I have a 2000 behind the Cummins in the chassis rails, the 2000 have a lower 1st gear  and reverse ratios, this is a 5 speed and I'm not going to worry about getting the sixth gear fitted, this set up is coupled to the 5.9 ISB Cummins, also have a 1000 that is new and was coupled to a Duramax this is a 6 speed, the housings are made as 6 speed but some applications only use the 5,I'm prety sure all 1000 have the same ratios but will look at the side plate in the morning and will let you know,OKA was thinking about upgrading to the 2000 because of the lower 1st and reverse ratios,The 3650P is a popular application in the US with medium size trucks like concrete mixers, garbage and also school buses.I cut the rear diff spring perches and rotated the rear diff 5 degrees, also altered the oil level to compensate and to make sure the outer pinion bearing gets good lubrication and that brings the tail shaft to a half decent operating angle,at the moment I trying to sort out the cooling side of things, found a couple of 16" electric fans that move 3000cfm each, the down side is the 23amp start up consumtion, will see how we go.

Cheers,Joe

Don't want to sell the 6sp by any chance?

I think i'll be going down the thermo fan route too, what size alt are you running?  I'm probably going to get a 200amp for mine, they're cheaper than the 85A i just bought for the Perkins.

Sorry Moose,it is for another of my retirment projects. The alternator that come with the engine is a 200 amp HD,it's quite large and because of the AC compressor I may have to change it,maybe with another 200 amp of a different mounting.

Cheers,Joe

No worries, gotta try.

My engine only came with the starter and twin piston air compressor, which may get in the road too.  The starter is 24V though so have to get a new one, won't be hard though.
