Besides CMCA providing $600 worth of towing for a break down, does anyone know of other providers? Most won't touch vehicles over 4 tonne. $600 might not go very far if stranded with a blown engine, gearbox etc half way up the birdsville track, the Canning stock route etc.

We take the view that anyone who will provide good cover for remote areas will also charge an arm and a leg for the premium. Put the money in the bank and be in a position to fix as much yoyrself as possible. The big disaster will just have to be handled somehow, if and when it happens. We are also members of the CMCA.

I'm a bit like Peter after an incident with NRMA premium cover a while back. One of the group we were with split the radiator in has 80 series on the Connie Sue, we limped into Warburton, rang NRMA through the WA auto club and were advised to get the vehicle to a major centre like Kalgoorlie where they could help us. The vehicle owner rang several times over a couple of days and got the same response each time, not worth a cent away from major routes. Just make sure that the vehicle is in as good a condition as possible before leaving home. If anything is suss fix it before you leave. The other problem in remote areas is that while most places can handle a Landcruiser size vehicle an Oka is too heavy for available tow trucks etc so any recovery is going to cost big money.

I was told by someone in the know that most roadside assist co's aren't equipped to carry big weight, his suggestion was to be insured for recovery, so shop around and see whats out there!!
