Hi All, Hope there is someone out there who might be able to help. My LT has stuck in low range, no amount of fiddling, tapping or gental persuasion can coax it out. I range Paul K when it occurred and he said to remove the top of the case because the selector rods have probably worn and stuck. This I am attempting to do however I have removed all the bolts "nothing visably holding it", the top will lift a few mills all the way round but then will not go any further. I have tried contacting Paul again this morning (I know it is Sunday!!) but he is off air. Does anybody know what could be stopping the top coming off, it is seems to be very solidly held in the lower LH corner. Also my copy of the LT manual is on disc at home so I have no way of having a look to see if there is some trick to getting it off or seeing what could be holding it. Any assistance would be appreciated. Cheers Wessa #400

Mine has stuck and I removed the morse cable anchor and then pulled the shaft out by hand. there is nothing to hold it but the detent springs. DO NOT LET THEM DROP INSIDE.

Looking at the manual there is nothing holding the top cover on except the bolts and two dowels front and rear. As Chalkie said the cover holds the detent springs and balls in so don't let them drop inside. I'd try Chalkie's method of pulling the cables off the front and operating the shafts by hand first

Wessa:-There are a few different things that could be the problem that I have found over the years on both of mine. 1:- After loading it all up I sometimes have to disengage the front wheeling hubs and then drive both forward and backwards to release the low range on the box. 2:- Another issue I have found is that I have as well as others, have forced the gear lever at the top inbetween the two units that decide the cable that is going to be high or low range. To fix that see if the unit is betweeen the two and then undo the adjusting bolts at the front of the motor frame and get the linkage back to where it is meant to be. I travelled 1000kms to solve that problem for someone once because they had just bought theirs and did not understand. Took 5 minutes to get it out of low range as it can get inbetween the selectors at the top very easily and be in low range as I had it happen once many years ago. 3:- Make sure the cable is still OK and not been damaged or needs to be adjusted. 4:- Do as the manual says and try to only change whilst slowly moving. Maybe it is none of the above good luck ABE TONY

Wessa You cannot get the top off the box while it is in gear. There is an interlock rod in the top of the box, it is about 6" long and prevents the box selecting low and high at the same time. When in gear the rod slides to one side and engages with the selector fork (sort of) so the fork can't move and because of this engagement you can't get the top off. This is a pretty rough recollection of what goes on in there. Be careful because you may have an additional problem now. Because you have disturbed one end of the lid and lifted it a bit there is a chance that one of the detents (spring and ball) could have popped out depending on how high you were able to lift it. If this is the case the shift fork is free to move about.

Thanks for all the assistance and suggestions. I bit the bullet and pulled the whole thing out and its heading for Paul's tommorrow morning to be checked out. The rear output seal is leaking, and I want to do the Cape in it next year so I am taking the opportunity to have it completely checked out. Thanks for all the replies. Cheers Wessa #400
