Peter Davis created the topic: For those who have gone to the darkside
Taken from internet.
How much torque and horsepower would you need for a 5 ton vehicle to have it reach 60 mph in 6 seconds?
5 tons = 4535 KG
In 6 seconds, from a standing start, reaching 60mph, 60mph = 26.8m/s
Power is work divided by time
and work done is the difference between starting and ending kinetic energies
W = KEf – KEi
The car started at rest, so KEi = 0 J. That leaves only the final kinetic energy to calculate:
Plugging in the numbers gives you:
KEf = 1/2(4535kg)(26.8m/s)^2
= 1,608,629J
So because
and the work done was
1,608,629 joules in 6 seconds
Then there were 271,434 W
1hp = 745.7W, so divide by that to get hp.
364hp.
Now, for the torque.
Let’s imagine the truck wheel is 24 inches in diameter = 58cm.
From stationary to 60mpg in 6 seconds is an average speed of 30mph, or 13.4m/s so the wheel needs to rotate at 23 revolutions per second, or 1380rpm.
= 1384 lbf torque.

I should do that one day since changing the turbo. From memory I think it was 60 seconds for 0-100 a few years ago.
The hard bit is finding a dead straight, dead flat, no wind and quiet road.
