Looks like it, certainly isn't the standard one. The high torque ones are made by nippondenso, who make the Toyota and most Jap cars and trucks. It looks very similar to them.

In 2004, I fitted one of these.......
Starter Motor (geared), UNIPOINT B/N 4981, UN 10409.
Supplied by Automotive Parts Group Limited, 362 Wellington Rd, Mulgrave, Victoria.
01-71895, STR-6078A, Perkins Mount.
It has been faultless.

A Starter Motor is a single point of failure (unless you happen to carry a spare), with electrical problems being the most likely cause. It's worth carrying a set of spare brushes and notes on how to replace them.
Also keep all the connections very clean so it doesn't fail to start at inconvenient moments.

Hi all,
What is the problem with the genuine starter? Is it a reliability issue or is it just not powerful enough to start a really cold motor?
For what it is worth, I have put in a solenoid to parallel the two batteries during starting, and it spins over very quickly even in winter.
My Oka has done about 300,000 k's - do you think I should replace the starter before undertaking any outback trips?
Thanks,
Paul

I imagine most original Lucas/CAV direct drive starters would have been replaced by better models over the years. I have a planetary geared (not offset geared) starter and it works fine.
It's actually an Iskra model AJZ3151 (or p/n IM527 from PJL Electrical), so it's not the original, but apart from dirty contacts causing intermittent starting problems, we've had no trouble with it.
The Oka starts on the first turn every time, but when I need to spin the motor without starting, it will do so quite happily for several minutes on a standard battery. I know some people have cold starting problems so two batteries in parallel would certainly help.
Starters are fairly simple and usually reliable devices, dirty connections (including the smaller Start Signal terminal on the solenoid) or worn brushes are the most likely problems. Being under the vehicle they can collect dirt and water inside so it's probably worth removing its cover plate (if possible on yours) and cleaning it out and checking on the state of the brushes. There should be an end cover or cover plate to give access to the brushes.
There's also a very useful document published by John Deere on the overhaul of many different types and makes of alternators and starter motors available here (11Mb pdf file).
If you can read the part number of your starter, you can do a cross reference search on the PJL website to find it's make(s) and characteristics. If not, post a photo so we can identify it.
