Hi all,
Doing a Dana 70 front and Dana 80 rear with the XML Michelins, and with a bent front driveshaft (so i worked out today!) with stuffed 1350 U-Joints i thought i may as well upgrade the front driveshaft. So in my research (and looking at upgrading to 1480 series U-Joints for the rear which if i do, it will be during the engine upgrade if that happens because of length changes then) i found the part numbers for the rear driveshaft (Thanks to Peter Fox for the Spicer PDF here). They are:
- Slip Yoke - 3-3-508KX
- Stub - K3-42-A451
- Weld Yoke - 3-28-267
- Flange Yoke - 3-2-159
So even though i may do an engine upgrade MUCH later down the track and that it's better to have a 'fuse' in drivetrain somewhere i'd prefer it to be the driveshaft than the NP205 (after just rebuilding it!). The 1480 series would probably not break before the transfer case and i think the 1410 series would be strong enough for the front either way (plus it's easier to replace a U-joint and/or driveshaft on the side of the road than a TC!). It looks like i can use the old front stub but need a new NP205 Output Yoke, Weld Yoke, tube and Slip Yoke. I've found these parts at Northern Driveline (thanks Peter Fox again!) and can get them locally through Spicer (more expensive). However, i need a new boot and can't seem to find the standard oka boot... Just wondering if someone can help there?
Cheers,
Alister

Hi Al,when you're talking about the engine upgrade, what sort of power are you talking about, are you keeping the Spicer box? or are you thinking about auto transmission?,personally I will look at a fuse on the lines of an axle shaft because if you have a failure and you have diff locks you can still get home with one axle, the conversion in my bus is with a divorced NP 205 because if I have a tranfer failure i can drop it and use the front prop shaft to go from the transmission to the rear diff, but as any one who been stranded in the bush knows, everything you do before you depart is theoretical but sometimes it does work, common sense and a light right foot is always the best prevention.
Cheers,Joe

Good points Joe, and good question. Not sure about the upgrade other than it being a Cummins, trans etc need to do more research and whether it will go ahead, if it does it will be a fair way into the future, i've already spent much too long rebuilding this time! Probably due to the theory you talk about... (and having too many tools allowing me to do everything myself!) Either way i think a 1410 upgrade to the front necessary and adequate either way and the rear will do for now untill i decide into the future. One thing though, after rebuilding the NP205, along with a few others, i'm not as impressed as some, i definitely think it's on it's limit in the OKA, the main problem being weight rather than power... There's some talk of a local person building Lomax equivalents in Aus which would be welcome. Anyway, i'd rather have destructible driveshafts (within reason) and drive home in 2wd (front or back) than rebuild a TC (that's my 2 bobs worth).
Anyway, back to the main point, anybody know where to get OKA driveshaft boots??? Spicer don't have them so where do they come from?

Two boot types are listed in the Oka parts manual, both of them fixed to the prop shaft with hose clamps
.The original is # 005767 which is a canvas boot and # 007722 which is a urethane boot. Because these have an Oka part No. as opposed to a Dana No. (preceeded with a DAN in the number) then these are an Oka special made of unobtanium.
You could get them made from canvas if you really need to fit them to the prop shaft tube, or alternatively if you fit to just the spline shaft you could use some bellows type tubing used by motocross bikes on the front forks or a CV joint rubber. Finding the right size might involve a bit of leg work
