I am in the process of servicing the diffs, and plan to check the torque of the crown wheel bolts. Are they left hand or right hand threads? Thanks in advance for the info. Tony

Tony I'm pretty sure they are RH, that's the way I've tightened them anyway ;-))
They do come loose and that is the reason the diff covers don't have drain plugs for the oil so that the cover is removed and the bolts torqued up at each oil change.
Another Oka owner found this out recently when he lost drive as the second last bolt fell out and the ONE remaining bolt bent and allowed the crownwheel to disengage from the pinion, the rest of the bolts were laying inside the bottom of the housing!

Thanks for the info Peter. I checked the rear diff this afternoon, and 4 of the bolts were under the specified torque requiring a little tightening. Certainly pays to check. Cheers Tony

It’s really important to check for movement side to side in carrier as well.

Well... someone said that they should not be reused and that they fatigue...

Dunno, but ARP has some schimko-grade jobs, which may be ok, or may not.
Either way I ordered a set...

I think the 60 and 70 use the same bolts(??).
(I'll carry the old ones as spares)

Is there any allowable sideways play?

Mine reads 0.004" (0.1-mm), so I think I need another shim-washer...

I have had broken and loose hemisphere bolts in the rear diff on a couple of occasions.
Paul Nott Loctites them in.

More recently, I had a carrier bolt come loose. Eventually it got clobbered and broke the head off. The head was then picked up by the crown wheel and it punched a tiny hole in the rear cover, right on the oil line. Over some kms, the oil splashed out until the front pinion bearing started to seize. None of this was noticed until we hit one of the bitumen patches on the Strzelecki. I had to pull the axles, drop the tail shaft, seal the ends of the housing to keep some oil in to lubricate the wheel bearings and come home in FWD. I had to put 4L of oil in for the bearings on the way home.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter, that’s a shite of a job in any location, glad you got home OK.

From memory, the bolts that came with my LSD were the highest grade (5 bars?) with a torque requirement of 130 ft lbs. I also loctited them.

While my axle was out I should also have re-shimmed the pinion bearing/bolt. It’s very tight but has some (fraction of mm) lateral movement. Probably where my piece of loose shim came from a few years back. But having just set the LSD bearings I lost the inclination.

Still in the RAH but not feeling too bad today, trying to retain my OKA memories, not easy after 2month incarceration and weird drug infusions.
Hopefully home for a while next week.

Thanks for all the info. It is good to know what to look out for, but also a bit scarey being aware of all the possible failings in an Oka! Tony

What's scary? What can fail or knowing about what can fail? :)
Nothing different in that regard from any other vehicle and the OKA is generally a better proposition to limp home with than many others.
And they only wear out when you use them :)

Well people don't last forever either.
It is what we do with our time, or with the vehicle that counts.

One good axel should be enough to make it home.
