I have a question regarding parts for the Tas 30 steering box. Mine has a leaking input shaft seal. I have read David's excellent article on this, and initially set out to purchase the input shaft seal kit. I have rung both Complete Steering and Safety Steer and both say that kit is no longer listed. There is a complete overhaul kit for $250 +gst. However, there is a european version and an american version. The guy at complete steering was unable to advise me which one I need without first removing the seal and measuring it. They only stock the european version, so presumably that is the common one used in aus. Has anyone else had this problem and worked out which is the correct kit for an Oka? Thanks

Hi Tony,

Also see this thread, i went to all the trouble of getting seals sent out only to find out when i pulled it out that there was a bearing gone and needed a reco'd one... i got a refund on the seal kit though! ;)

There's also this thread but i'm not too sure how useful it will be:

Hi Tony,
Vince had his exchanged for a fully rebuilt one for about $800.00 in Perth, I think he had to put down a deposit which he got back once they confirmed that his could be rebuilt.

Thanks everyone for the info and links. After reading through it al I now wonder if I should be looking for a recond steering box. I checked for lateral play in the input shaft and found about 1mm play (box in vehicle & nothing dismantled). How much free play is too much???? The leak does not seem excessive. I first noticed it a few days ago as a line of fluid down the side of the box.It was not dripping on the floor nor spread anywhere on the vehicle. Any advice appreciated.
Cheers Tony

You need to exchange your box. That's the input bearing slopping which i imagine a bearing would have a play of maybe a micron or two, ie. any play is too much... Plus i would advise it with that much play anyway because as you can read in my thread you really don't want to be changing it in a car park in the middle of nowhere!
