Fuel Tank contents

I am thinking of fitting inline fuel filters between the existing diesel tanks and the selector valve. What filters have people fitted, were they the small plastic inline type or the CAV 296 (Lucas) type with water separator. The other question I have is, what is inside the fuel tank access hole. Is it just the fuel sender and pickup pipe, is there a sock at the end of the pickup pipe or just open ended entry pickup pipe.
I do not have any diagram or listing for the fuel tank assembly in my parts calalogue, should there be one in my catalogue?
On that old subject of tyres and rims, I finally got some legal rims, Method 305HD 17x8,5" zero offset alloys with 37x12.5 Maxxis M/T tyres. Just for interest as I had seen a few questions on fit of bigger wheels, this combination clears the springs at full lock by about 25mm, and increased the track by 20mm, 25mm max increase being the heavy vehicle code max track allowable increase. I did however fit wheel flares from Paul as I did not want to sand blast the side of the OKA bodywork. Thanks to all those that have contributed to this site and helped in maintaining these vehicles.

I fitted a CAV style filter after each tank and before the selector and another CAV style filter after the lift pump and before the injector pump.
No idea what the end of the pick-up looks like............

I have a CAV style filter on my Patrol. Positives are they work well, replacement filters are cheap, & widely available from just about any 'rural store' . Negative is that they are a bit messy/fiddly to change compared to a 'spin on' type - but it's not a big deal Pic shows the CAV & standard fuel filter internals after a trip from Vic to NW Queensland & back on mainly dirt roads. As a result I tripled the replacement mileage for the main filter.

When fitting the CAV 296, I also fitted a diesel compatible inline bulb primer, like outboard motors have. It makes the process of priming after a filter change *so much* easier.

Thanks for the priming pump suggestion, my vehicle is fitted with an electric priming pump, whilst its great for priming the existing filters on the pressure side of the elec lift pump, I did have concerns as to whether or not the lift pump has sufficient suction lift capacity. The lift pump is an electric inline Goss pump. Re the priming pumps you mention, are they built into the filter housing, as found on some toyotas or separate. I assume separate because no self respecting Nissan owner would fit anything off a Toyota that may reduce Nissan reliability would they.

:) Yes fitted separately 'inline' between the Pre-filter & the main filter. At the time I bought it I was uncertain, even though diesel rated, how long it might last. Installed inline makes it very easy to bypass if it were ever needed, but it's still good over 10 years later. The standard filter has a small pump on top of the filter with very short stroke & was hard work to use & took forever, even before I fitted the CAV. Priming the CAV in addition to the main filter promised to be a job I would not look forward to. The bulb primer only takes 2 or 3 squeezes to fill the CAV & to fully prime the system.

Cuppa,
where did you find the diesel rated priming bulb?

I use a couple of inline filters before the pollack valve and a priming bulb sounds like a good idea to me.

Hi Frank, after 10 years all I can remember is that I bought it online.
A quick google just turned up a few results like this one. Just need to ensure it is diesel rated & the correct size to fit your hose. I’d suggest that unless it mentions diesel that it’s probably best to keep looking.
